Summer is winding down and soon schools will be starting back up. Are you ready?
I'm not talking about from a parent standpoint, I am quite sure the majority of parents are ready for their kids to head back to school and get back into a daily routine and decent bedtime schedule.
However, I am referring to those unit leaders; Cubmasters, Assistant Cubmasters, Den Leaders, Scoutmasters, ASM's, Crew Advisors, etc., are you ready to reengage your program after taking the summer off?
Whether or not you and your unit took the summer off, you need to be ready for the Scouts to reengage in Scouting activities throughout the school year. Here are a few things to consider doing to jump start the program as the school year kicks off.
- Water Day - Kids love water, have a Pack picnic at the park or other recreational area. Set up water slides, water balloon fights, cook some hot dogs, just have fun for the sake of having fun.
- Have an Outing - Take a Hike, canoe trip, overnight camping, or a night at a baseball game. Do a team building activity to help reconnect the Scouts with their peers.
- Leader's/Committee Meeting - If you haven't done it already, you really need to have your Annual Program Planning meeting. Pull all the pertinent calendars (school, council, chartered org.) and lay out the year's program, outings, and activities. Also, ensure all your leaders are coming back or at least have new ones in place.
- Open House/Roundup - No matter where you are, you are going to lose some Scouts. Sometime ist from moves, sometimes its from additional activities on their plate, and sometimes they have lost interest. Ensure you get your face and unit out there during roundup time. Recruit new boys and families into the program. Encourage your Scouts to bring a friend to a meeting and offer an incentive to do so.
Make sure you are prepared to hit the ground running. Den meetings planned out? Monthly Troop meeting themes set? You have only a short time left to get ready.
What other things can you do to get ready for the start of school?
